What are the basic rules of pickleball in a tournament setting?
Key rules include:
Serving: The serve must be underhand, with the paddle contacting the ball below the waist. The server must stand behind the baseline and serve diagonally to the opponent’s service court.
Scoring: Most tournaments use side-out scoring, where points can be won only by serving. Games are typically played to 11, 15, or 21 points, with players needing to win by 2 points.
Double Bounce Rule: The ball must bounce once on each side of the net before volleys can be played.
Non-Volley Zone (Kitchen): Players cannot volley the ball (hit it before it bounces) while standing in the kitchen (7-foot area near the net).
For full tournament-specific rules, always consult the specific tournament description or contact the head referee listed on the tournament page.
How do I register for a pickleball tournament?
Find the tournament: Search for the event you’re interested in, including location, date, and level of play.
Create an account: If required, create an account on the registration site.
Choose your events: Pick the events you want to participate in (e.g., Men’s Doubles, Women’s Singles, Mixed Doubles, etc.).
Submit payment: Pay the registration fee, which can vary by tournament.
Confirm your registration: You should receive a confirmation email with details on your tournament schedule and any additional instructions.
How are players and teams seeded in tournaments?
Pro-level players are seeded based on their national or international ranking.
Amateur players or those in lower divisions may be seeded based on their past performance or a seeding committee’s assessment.
If you’re new to a tournament or don’t have a ranking, you may be unseeded, and your placement will depend on the draw.
Note: Unless otherwise stated, a person can typically sign up for a bracket higher than their rating but not below. For instance…someone with a 3.0 rating may play in the brackets for 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, or 5.0, etc. A person with a 5.0 rating may not play in a 3.0 bracket. The exception to this would be when brackets are seeded by age only (such as in juniors). Junior may play UP in age but not down. Seniors may play DOWN in age but not UP.
What should I bring to a pickleball tournament?
Pickleball paddle(s): It’s a good idea to bring at least one backup paddle. IMPORTANT – Make sure your paddle is approved. Here is the link for the USA Pickleball approved paddles. In official tournaments with referees they will expect you to have verified ahead of time that your paddle is approved.
Appropriate shoes: Wear court shoes with non-marking soles for safety and grip.
Pickleballs: Some tournaments provide balls, but it’s always good to have a few of your own. Our recommendation – Franklin X-40.
Comfortable athletic clothing: Dress in breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics.
Water and snacks: Stay hydrated and keep your energy levels up with light snacks. We recommend Pickleball Cocktail by Jigsaw Health. You can save 10% with every order by using discount code FOTG10.
Towel and sunscreen: Protect yourself from the elements, especially if playing outdoors.
Tournament rules and schedule: Have a copy of the tournament’s schedule, rules, and any updates on hand either in print or easily accessible on your device.
Many people visit sites like Pickleball Superstore for pickleball equipment needs.
What happens if I need to withdraw or cancel my participation?
Check the cancellation policy: Before registering, review the tournament’s refund and cancellation policy, as some events may have a non-refundable registration fee or a partial refund option if you withdraw early.
Notify organizers ASAP: Contact the tournament director as soon as possible if you need to withdraw.
Substitute players: In some cases, a substitute may be allowed if the withdrawal is in a doubles or team event but typically it will require one partner to withdraw and the other person to register which may involve a full fee or a partial fee. This is due to the fact that official tournaments have already paid the fees for participation and they may not be able to “swap” players.
Always communicate with the event organizers to ensure you follow the proper procedure for withdrawal.
